Class Syllabus

Mrs. Orton

Teal Side

7th Grade Language Arts

Santa Maria Middle School

Room 224

It is the beginning of a new year and the beginning of a new grade. As a 7th grader, students have increased expectations and requirements. I hope that this letter will help explain the requirements and expectations that I have for my students in my class.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is important. If a student cannot be here, it is expected that the student will ask me for their missed work the day that he/she returns to school. Students are given two (2) days for each day that he/she was absent to make up any missed work.

DAILY CLASS SUPPLIES/DONATIONS

Coming prepared to class is crucial. If a student does not come prepared to class, then he/she is hurting his/her chance at succeeding. Having the correct materials teaches students accountability and responsibility. Failure to have the proper materials will be addressed on a student by student basis. In order for students to be prepared for my class, he/she will need the following materials:

  • 2 Spiral notebooks
  • Loose leaf paper
  • 1 Pocket folder with or without prongs (for each class you have me)
  • Pencils, if mechanical please have lead
  • Pens (blue or black only)
  • Highlighter (Pink, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple)
  • Pencil Sharpener  (optional)
  • Colored Pencils/ Markers (optional)

The 7th Grade Teal Team would also appreciate any donations of the following items for our students use:

  • Tissue
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • White Board Markers
  • Disinfecting Wipes
  • Post It Notes
  • Highlighters

  • The different types of writing
    • Personal Narrative
    • Explanatory

HOMEWORK

My students will receive weekly homework. This weekly homework will be a reading log. The students will be responsibile for Reading 30 minutes a day for five days. The homework will be passed out on Mondays, and will need to be turned in on Monday of the next week.
They will also receive occassional homework of assignments that they did not finish in class. These assignments will be due the next day.

EXPECTED CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR

Respectful behavior is expected. I only have four rules for my class: Be on time, Be prepared, Be responsible and Be respectful. If your student is acting in a way that keeps me from teaching or other students from learning, then that student must be disciplined using the guidelines set down in the student agenda.

7TH GRADE BEHAVIOR CHARTS/ INCENTIVES

All Santa Maria Teachers use a behavior chart, in which students that demonstrate appropriate behavior are rewarded. Rewards will be quarterly incentives. Once a student has received five marks within any one category (Behavior, Tardies, Being Prepared, Uniform, and Gum) on the behavior chart the students will lose this privilege.

I look forward to working with you in my class and to having a great year. Please take the time to fill out the attached form with your parent, so that I may contact them with updates, progress, and praises throughout the year.

Thank you
